HVAC systems can be complex and require trained technicians to properly diagnose, troubleshoot and repair equipment. With all that said there are some things a customer can do before the call is made to the hvac service company. Here is a list I put together to possibly avoid the customer a service call expense and get your system up and going.
Check electrical panel circuit breaker for furnace or a/c. If tripped reset breaker and try to turn on system. Breakers can trip due to bad weather conditions or power interruptions especially if equipment was running during the power interruption.
Check thermostat display to verify you have the system in the proper mode (heat or cool). Also check thermostat to see if it takes batteries. Replace and check system.
If it's winter and you have a gas furnace check the exhaust and intake vent pipes outside for obstructions such as snow, leaves, bird nest or debris. Remove and check system.
Another thing to do is to turn off equipment breaker at electrical panel, wait 5 minutes and turn back on. This resets system lock-out on circuit board. If system restarts and lockouts again call for service.
Check air filter and replace if needed. This can eliminate furnace from overheating causing locking out and a/c systems from freezing up. Equipment runs longer and is placed under improper load when air filters are not changed.
For those who live in rural areas using propane check the tank outside. You could be out of propane or near to empty. Those who use well gas check the regulator outside and If "kicked out" reset or call the person who maintains the well pump.
These are some things to look for before calling for service. Hope this helps! Wharton HVAC will be on standby so call us if you need help.
